Book Talk with Author Jack Dempsey

Hosted by the Historical Society of Greater Lansing

Join us for a discussion on Radical of Radicals: Austin Blair, Civil War Governor – In His Own Words (Michigan in the Civil War), a powerful new work that brings to life the words and legacy of Michigan’s own “War Governor”, Austin Blair.

Blair, a fierce defender of human rights and the Union cause, believed secession was treason and pushed boldly for emancipation, equality, and victory in the Civil War. Branded a “radical” in his time, his vision of equal opportunity and justice for all marked him as a leader ahead of his era. This first of two volumes presents Blair’s speeches and writings in his own voice, carefully annotated and framed by historical context, offering a rare window into one of Michigan’s most consequential statesmen.
